Can crystal and natural wood coexist? Or vintage glass and stainless steel? Absolutely, says CityLine designer Ramsin Khachi of Khachi design Group. This shot of a living room he recently created proves the point…

Khachi’s mixture of sleek style and warm materials will be a hallmark of the kitchen, family room, powder room, mud room and garage that he’s creating for the 2010 Eurodale dream home at the national home show (NHS). (This blog and the little projects guide are sponsored by NHS.) “I was recently walking by a store and saw picture frames with crystals embedded in the side,” says Khachi of his inspiration for the home. “Crystal is so elegant, but rustic elements add balance to it.” That mix is what people are trying to find today in their interiors, he adds. “They want something clean lined, but they still love character.”

In the Eurodale dream home kitchen, for instance, Khachi plans to combine stone and wood with stainless steel and sparkly crushed glass. “I’ve created my own sheets of tempered glass—like crystal panels—to embed in the kitchen island,” he says. “It’s a luxe look for less.” An open glass white wine rack, topped with a stainless-steel flat bar, will connect the kitchen into the dining room.

In the family room, meanwhile, Khachi has planned a fireplace framed with walnut and Modono Glass Tiles. (These are vintage glass tiles back painted with iridescent paint.)

He’s currently searching for the best coffee table, but likes the look of Restoration Hardware’s furniture factory Cart (below). “It’s about being contemporary and rustic, not about trends,” he says.

The Eurodale dream home shower room will feature a similar blend. “I was inspired by the “PuraVida” faucet from Hansgrohe,” describes Khachi. “I wanted to juxtapose the clean-cut lines of this modern faucet with the warm and inviting feel of a farmhouse.”

To add texture, he plans to incorporate a burnt-oak countertop and organic looking vermiculate wallpaper. “The wallpaper will be on the ceiling and come behind the toilet, with little crystal points scattered throughout,” Khachi says.

The mudroom and garage of the 2010 Eurodale dream home will demonstrate a similar balance between functional design, modern looks and warmth. “A mudroom is what families need,” says Khachi. His will feature a mix of white, marble and some brown and dark brown tones, but maintain some glossy elements, as well. The pet dog wash area will be surrounded by marble and back painted glass, for instance. “I don’t want to lose the glitter and elegance, but want to do it in a functional way.”

Likewise, the garage: Khachi envisions a bright space complete with a diy zone, a large-screen computer/TV, sharp-looking overhead racks and slot-wall tricked out with LED strip lighting. “It’s the garage I’d love to have,” Khachi admits, adding, “Garages are no longer a catchall junk space—now it’s about cabinetry, organization and space for hobbies.”
